Schuylkill Haven
Tidy streets around Island Park and the old Berger's corner — lots of updated singles with dated panels and finished basements that need proper circuits.
Based right here in Pottsville and working roughly 50 miles out — Schuylkill County first, plus Carbon, Berks, Luzerne, Lebanon and Northumberland.
Pottsville is home. It is the county seat, the city where the Yuengling brewery has been stacked into the hillside since 1829, and where Centre Street still climbs past the courthouse toward Garfield Square. We work on the brick row homes downtown, the big Victorians and Queen Annes along Mahantongo Street, the tidy singles up in Yorkville and Fishbach, and the properties out toward Tumbling Run and the reservoirs below Sharp Mountain. If you have walked the hill from Union Street in January, you know exactly how steep this town is — and why an electrician who is already here beats one driving in from Harrisburg.
Pottsville houses have character and Pottsville houses have old wiring. Many were built before anybody imagined a microwave, a window unit and a treadmill on the same circuit. We spend a lot of days here replacing tired 60- and 100-amp services with modern 200-amp panels, grounding two-prong outlets, sorting out additions that were spliced in decades ago, and adding kitchen and bath circuits that finally hold. Since parking is what it is on the narrow streets, we plan the truck and the material drop ahead of time so your neighbors are not blocked in all day.
Schuylkill County is anthracite country — sixty-some boroughs and townships tucked between Broad Mountain, Blue Mountain and the Mahantongo ridges. It is Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland, the restored train station in Tamaqua, the bleenies and pierogi stands at summer block parties, Locust Lake and Tuscarora on hot Saturdays, Sweet Arrow Lake out past Pine Grove, and the hawks riding the ridge at Hawk Mountain each fall. Route 61, Route 209 and Interstate 81 tie it all together, which is how we reach Shenandoah in the morning and Orwigsburg in the afternoon without a problem.
The housing here tells the coal story: patch-town doubles and row homes in Minersville, Mahanoy City and Saint Clair; mountain-top homes in Frackville that take the brunt of the wind and ice; farmhouses and outbuildings out in the Ringtown and Hegins valleys. Every one of them brings its own electrical quirks — undersized services, unprotected cellar wiring, service masts loosened by a bad winter, wells and detached garages fed by cable that should have been retired years ago. Twenty-eight years of working these exact houses is why the diagnosis usually comes quick and the fix comes right the first time.
